Chapter 32

Alba

At engineering school they never mentioned how fast Godspeed was supposed to be, but seemingly quite quick, because Carlo made his appearance minutes after Valentina said her unsettling goodbyes. Berenice gifted me an old pair of boots, one of her crazy patchwork dresses and even a warm parka. All the witches hugged me in an uncomfortably friendly fashion, somehow oblivious to the fact that they had kept me prisoner in that house for days and sent my vampire lover to a very likely demise.

Carlo arrived in his shiny red cabriolet and honked from the other side of the cobbled street.

The witches ushered me out the door in their mother-hen way; I nearly had to hold myself to a streetlamp so they didn’t shove me straight into Carlo’s car.

“I’ll need my passport, please,” I said, holding the lamp post with both hands. “And my phone!”

“Oh yes!” Agnes came out running and threw me my purse. I caught it in the air, shocked by the strong smoke stench coming from it. “The plane ticket is inside, but sorry about the phone,” Agnes said, glancing away coyly. “You must have dropped your bag during the fire.”

Yeah sure. During the fire.

The phone―or rather, its remains―could have well been trampled by a wildebeest stampede. The witches had thrown all the crushed pieces together into a Ziplock bag, so at least I didn’t have to fish out the odd chips and glass shards from the bottom of my purse.

Of course, that same phone had been working perfectly when Alice had shown it to me a couple of days ago. No doubt, those women must be direct descendants of Snow White’s wicked stepmother.

On the plus side, my passport was still there, and so was Clarence’s vintage copy of Robin Hood. Thankfully, the black feather was still inside, untouched, and I caressed it secretly as Carlo turned on the engine and sped out of the small city of Como.

“I see you like to travel light,” Carlo commented, adjusting the rear-view mirror. The rosiness was slowly returning to his cheeks, and he was in a better mood than the previous day.

I grunted and checked the car clock. Ten fifteen. The museum must be open already.

“I need you to turn around,” I said to Carlo, not really expecting him to comply.

“Forgot anything?”

“Yes. I must return something to Alice. She’s at the museum, working.”

“What museum? The Murano Glass Museum?”

“No. The Museum of Witchcraft. It won’t take me long, but it’s important, because I’m not sure I’ll see her again. Can you please turn back? Please?”

I flashed him what I considered my sweetest smile, hoping it didn’t make me resemble a hyena in my current state of neglect. He studied me with unaccustomed depth, almost like he pitied me.

“Okay.” He hesitated and exhaled loudly. “But be quick, or you might...” He paused and made a dangerous U-turn in the middle of the road that sent my stomach up my throat. “Miss your flight.”

He parked in front of the glass door, settling himself right under the big round sign which read divieto di sosta―no parking.
